Introduction to pH and EC for Optimal Soil-based Indoor Plant Growth

Maintaining proper pH and electrical conductivity (EC) levels are essential for healthy plant growth. For indoor plants grown in soil, the pH and EC of the soil must be monitored and adjusted as necessary to ensure optimal nutrient uptake and growth. What is pH?

pH is a measure of the acidity or basicity of a substance. In the case of soil, pH measures the concentration of hydrogen or hydroxide ions in the soil. pH levels in soil range from 1 (very acidic) to 14 (very basic). For most plants, a pH range of 6.0 to 7.0 in soil is ideal. When the pH level of the soil falls outside of this range, the plant may not be able to absorb nutrients properly, which can lead to stunted growth or other issues.


What is EC?

EC, or electrical conductivity, measures the ability of a substance to conduct electricity. In soil, EC measures the concentration of salt ions in the soil. Nutrients in soil are generally in ionic form, and the EC of the soil can be used as an indicator of nutrient availability. High EC levels can indicate a buildup of nutrients, while low EC levels can indicate a lack of nutrients.

On the other hand, if the EC level is too low, it can indicate a lack of nutrients, which can lead to nutrient deficiencies and poor growth.


How to Manage pH and EC in Soil

To maintain the proper pH and EC levels in soil, it's important to test the soil regularly. A soil test kit can be used to measure the pH and EC levels of the soil. If the pH level is too high or too low, soil amendments such as sulfur or lime can be added to adjust the pH level. If the EC level is too high, flushing the soil with water can help to remove excess nutrients. If the EC level is too low, fertilizers can be added to the soil to provide additional nutrients.
